Studio

My studio is the place that contains everything I need to paint.

I do a range of different art work here, from small oil paintings on panel, larger works on canvas, right up to really large scale work like some of the commissions I have done for the Spiegeltent, or the commission I am doing now for Luna Park which is 60 sqm. So the studio is necessarily large, and well equipped and organised.

I love being there and working. It is a beautiful light clear space with big walls. I share it with another artist, Alex Rowland, who is a terrific painter, and is very professional in the way she works. I think its really important to share a studio with people you work well with. We both have private spaces, but there is also a large shared work space of around 100 sqm that we use when we need more room.

I start work at around 7am, and work intensively until around midday. This is when I do all the really focused and creative work. I then do a couple more hours after lunch, which is usually the more routine or non creative things, like ordering materials, organizing things etc and finish the work day at around 4.30.

Studio is very important to me, and has a big impact on my work. It needs to be a place that I like the feeling of, and is set up I in a way so that I can work productively. There is a lot of work involved in just finding and setting up a studio, but it is well worth while to create a good space.
